Real Sociedad will be taking on English opposition once again in a club friendly, having suffered defeat to Newcastle United by a narrow margin, 1-0 to be precise. Chelsea is their next opponent. Chelsea is coming into this one on the back of a 2-1 victory over Ferencvarosi. They went 1-0 down following a goal by former Fulham man, Zoltan Gera but equalized via their Brazilian midfielder, Ramires. It was down to new signing, Cesc Fabregas, to finish off the match by scoring a classy goal for his new team.
The victory was marred by an injury to Didier Drogba, who had to go off after hurting his ankle. Drogba of course is one of Jose Mourinho's new recruits. However, he is no stranger to the Chelsea scene having won Chelsea the UEFA Champions League Final in 2012 and countless other matches. Drogba might have lost some pace; however, his nose for goal is still the same. He still has the tenacity required to scare opposition defenders.
Mourinho's side beat Besiktas and Fenerbahce coming into this match but also lost to Werder Bremen. The final score was rather embarrassing as the Germans beat them, 3-0. Preseason of course is not always an indicator of what is set to come in the actual season ahead but it is a good time to try new things out. Chelsea have plenty to prove after failing to win a single trophy this season. The first trophy in England has already gone to the team which can be considered his least favorite rival; Arsenal claimed the FA Community Shield after beating Manchester City, 3-0, at Wembley.
Real Sociedad has been quite inconsistent in preseason friendlies. They beat Aberdeen, 2-3, recently but lost to Alaves, 3-1. Of course, their match against Aberdeen was a competitive one; they are involved in the Europa League playoffs. They beat Aberdeen, 2-0, in the first leg, thus winning by a big aggregate margin over the two legs.
Can they provide a shock and beat Chelsea in this one?
