Premier League sides Manchester City and Liverpool will face each other at the Yankee Stadium in an International Champions Cup encounter on Wednesday, the 30th of July.

Both sides have tasted victory in their respective matches they have played so far in the International Champions Cup. Reigning English champions scored a dominant victory over AC Milan as they subjected the Italian side to a 5-1 mauling.

Montenegrin international Stevan Jovetic was the star of the show as he rounded off a wonderful performance with a brace. His opener was a well struck finish from a Jesus Navas through-ball and the 24 year old added another and City’s fifth after expertly finishing Aleksandar Kolarov’s pass.

Other Man City scorers included outcast Scott Sinclair, Jesus Navas and 17 year old prospect Kelechi Iheanacho, whereas AC Milan’s only goal of the match was scored by Ghana international Sulley Muntari.

Manuel Pellegrini expressed his delight over Jovetic’s performance against AC Milan and is confident that he can produce better performances in the upcoming season. The former Fiorentina man’s debut season in the Premier League was highlighted by injuries and fitness problems as the 24 year old made just 13 Premier League appearances which included just two starts. But his Chilean manager has insisted that Jovetic can play an important role next season.

"Well Stevan had a lot of bad luck last year," Pellegrini said.

"He had a lot of injuries during the whole year so it is very difficult for a player to have an important performance when he cannot play three games in a row.”

"In this year he started the pre-season the same how he finished last year playing well.”

"I think now he works hard and continues every day, he will demonstrate why he is here at Manchester City because I think he is very good player."

The former Malaga boss thoroughly enjoyed his team’s performance and praised their style of play as they steamrolled AC Milan.

"I think it was a very good game for our team, it is always important to win and also important to score five goals," the Chilean tactician said.

"But not only that, I thought that we played with good pace and that is very important in the pre-season and we must continuing trying to improve our team and playing this game."

"You can win, and winning the way we did today is better."

Liverpool on the other hand are currently on a rebuilding phase after losing their star man Luis Suarez to Barcelona for a club record fee, but England international Daniel Sturridge is positive he can replace the departing star.

"In terms of next season for the goals, I'll step up myself and everyone has to," Sturridge said.

"It was a unique partnership and I wish Luis all the best. We shared some good times together."

"We created history with our goals and became the most successful Liverpool partnership in one season."

"But we will move forward as a team. It's everyone's job to do that, the new boys who've come in as well as the players who have been there all season."

Despite losing one of the best players in the world in Luis Suarez, Sturridge claimed that Liverpool were capable of excelling without him and insisted that other players will step up in his absence.

"Liverpool's a huge club, an elite club and people don't realise that," he said. "This is a huge club, with a lot of players who can step up. Luis has left. That's football, he's moved on."

"For me, with the signings the manager has made - exciting players, young players, up-and-comers as they call them - we are going to have that winning mentality."

"Players come and go in football, that's the nature of the game. Some will remain at a club their whole career, like Stevie Gerrard, and some will move.”

Liverpool however did not enjoy the finest outings as far as attacking play was concerned as they managed to run away with a 1-0 win over Olympiakos . Raheem Sterling’s goal from a deflected Daniel Sturridge shot was the only goal of the match as Liverpool clinched a 1-0 win over the Greek side.
