The Russians, despite the amount of talent they possess, could exit the 2014 FIFA World Cup against a high flying Algeria side

A World Cup full of surprises has seen Algeria take its initial steps towards a berth in the Round of 16. Algeria took on South Korea in its second match in Group H. They showed plenty of courage by getting rid off their conservative tactics and going forward. Indeed, Algeria went into half time three goals to the good. In the second half, the Algerians held off the aggressive Koreans, wrapping the match up, 4-2.

Hours earlier, supporters had seen Russia succumb to a late Belgium goal. The Russians have earned only a single point in this tournament. Their performances though have not been poor. They should have arguably beaten South Korea in the opening round of fixtures; also, they frustrated the Belgians and deserved at least a point from that game.

Now, Russia find themselves in a very tought spot. Algeria only need a point to advance and will not be in danger unless South Korea beats Belgium by four clear goals. Russia can only overtake Algeria if they beat the African side by a three goal margin. Even then, they will not be assured of progression as South Korea might be able to overtake them due to goal difference.

Algeria thus has a high probability of progressing, especially as Belgium needs at least a point against South Korea to be guaranteed top spot in the group. They will simply be glad to have a fair chance to qualify for the next round unlike in 1982, when an agreement between Germany and Austria resulted in Algeria being knocked out. The Germans beat the Austrians 1-0, honoring a "non-aggression pact" in Gijon, Spain which saw the Algerians dumped out; Germany and Austria progressed to the next round instead. Germany had known Algeria's result as Algeria had played before their match kicked off.

Can Algeria secure the point they need to reach the next round?
