Portugal has their back against the ropes, as they cannot afford to lose on Sunday. Watch live on TV and Online as the USA tries to book their place in the knockout stage.

Weather conditions in Manaus on Sunday will not be very kind to both the Portuguese and Americans, but they will both have to adapt. Three very important points are on the line, to the point where the Yanks could clinch a spot in the knockout round with a victory, and a German victory or draw over Ghana.

For Portugal, things are not as easy. Paulo Bento’s side were humbled against Germany in their opening match, with injuries and a red card not offering much help to the situation.

Adding to an injured list that already consists of Fabio Coentrao and Hugo Almeida, goalkeeper Rui Patricio looks to miss the group stage, while Bruno Alves is the latest concern for the Portuguese manager.

Paulo Bento is going to have a nightmare trying to make his team selection. All of that starts in between the posts. Does he go with Eduardo, who played very well against Mexico in one of their preparation matches, or does he send out Beto, who helped guide Sevilla to a Europa League title?

His biggest concern will be Ronaldo’s fitness. The Real Madrid forward had come into the tournament with some injury concerns, and after a lackluster performance against Germany, reports emerged that he could miss the remainder of the tournament. Fortunately for the Portuguese, those rumors have been denied, and now the captain will have to lift the spirit of his players.

“Everyone knows about Ronaldo’s talent,” Fabio Coentrao told reporters upon his arrival in Portugal on Thursday. “He is the best player in the world, and on Sunday he will prove that against the United States.”

Jurgen Klinsmann and his players would prefer Ronaldo save his best performance for another day.

Some will argue that this USMNT is far from their greatest squad over the years, but just like they proved against Ghana, their never give up attitude helps them grind out results.

With the absence of Jozy Altidore due to injury, Klinsmann will need to decide if he is going to start Aron Johannsson or Chris Wondolowski. 23-year-old Johannsson will provide more speed and technical ability, while Wondo will bring more experience to the table.

In the midfield could be where the match is won or lost.

Michael Bradley and Alejandro Bedoya will be up against the likes of Joao Moutinho and Raul Meireles, with William Carvalho another defensive option that could come into the starting XI. The team that can take control of the match early on and dictate the pace of the game may be able to do just enough to come away with the victory.

Dempsey’s willingness to drop deep to help organize play will be fundamental to the Americans. If the Seattle Sounders star can have one of his inspired matches and get a chance or two in front of goal, Portugal will really have their back against the wall.
