Pepe got himself into trouble in Portugal's opening match, but luckily FIFA has only suspended him for one match.

For those fans that follow the Portuguese national team closely as well as Real Madrid, they will know that Pepe is not one to shy away from anyone.

The Brazilian born defender played all of his senior footballing career in Portugal before moving to Real Madrid in 2007, which gave him the opportunity to get Portuguese citizenship. Since then, he has featured in 59 matches for the Lusitanos, and he has also scored three goals.

On the negative side of his great footballing ability, is his hot-headed reactions and lack of discipline at times. All of that was on display in Portugal’s opening match against Germany, where the Portuguese were trailing by two goals.

A needless and inexcusable head-butt against Thomas Mueller earned Pepe a well-deserved red card, which forces him out of Portugal’s must win match against the USA. His never back down mentality got the best of him yet again, just as it has in previous occasions while playing for Los Merengues.

Many had expected Pepe to get a two-match ban, but surprisingly, FIFA issued a one-match ban along with a fine of nearly $10,000. This comes as somewhat good news for Paulo Bento, knowing that his experienced central defender will be available to take on Ghana, but if they are unable to get a positive result against the USA, his presence will not count for much.

Fans have voiced their opinions on social media about FIFA’s decision. While some are surprised, others believe this situation should not tarnish Pepe’s reputation with the Selecao.
