Cameroon coach Volker Finke described Benoit Assou-Ekotto's action as "unimaginable" as the defender headbutted his own team-mate during their loss to Croatia

Cameroon failed to show their strengths at the World Cup as the African nations crashed out of the 2014 edition in Brazil early, being the only the third country to be sent packing their bags.

The Indomitable Lions drop out of football's greatest tournament in the group stages for the second time in a row after they become the first team eliminated from the 2010 competition in South Africa.

The 1990 quarter-finalists also saw themselves dumped out of the tournament without winning a single game, a record that has run for 12 years as their last three points came back in 2002 at the World Cup held in South Korea and Japan, courtesy of a 1-0 triumph over Saudi Arabia.

And the manner of their exit was one which brought much shame as the team melted down during their 4-0 defeat at the hands of Croatia.

First, during the first half of the two side's group A encounter, Barcelona midfielder Alex Song was guilty of a hideous foul as the Blaugrana midfielder attacked Mario Mandzukic with his elbow during the game, earning himself a straight red card.

The drama continued as Queens Park Rangers defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto let his temper boil over before he headbutted his own team-mate Benjamin Moukandjo in injury time.

"It's unimaginable. I saw this happen and I need to find out exactly what happened, why exactly these two players exploded," said Cameroom coach Volker Finke as he reacted to the disgraceful incident.

"I hate to see that. It's not the image of Cameroon I want to project."
