The Black Stars and the Stars and Stripes go head to head for the third straight time in a World Cup.

This evening, the second pairing in this tournament's toughest group will meet up in a clash that will be quite familiar to most observers. For the third straight time, Ghana and the United States face off in a World Cup competition, and this will be the second time the two sides will battle it out in the group stages.

The Black Stars arguably have had an impressive rise on the world stage. They made their debut only eight years ago in Germany and impressively finished second in their group behind tournament winners Italy, defeating the aforementioned USA as well as the Czech Republic in the process. And while not surprisingly they were sent home by South American powerhouse Brazil, they nonetheless fared impressively for a side making their first ever appearance.

Four years later, they made even more progress on their native continent and were cruelly denied a spot in the semi-finals by Luis Suarez and Uruguay in a game that still makes many supporters grind their teeth in frustration. However, Ghana joined a elite duo of African sides--Cameroon and Senegal--to successfully reach the quarter-finals, and again,

Captain Asamoah Gyan will definitely remember that match against Uruguay, for it was in that game that he missed the resulting spot-kick that forced the game to penalties. Had he converted his penalty after Suarez was sent off, Ghana would have surely made the quarter-finals at the expense of the South Americans, but were knocked out via a penalty shoot out. The Al Ain star will definitely be hoping to guide his side out of their group and progress even further in their tertiary World Cup appearance, but the United States will not make it easy.

Having lost twice to their opponents, including being knocked out of the tournament last time around, the Stars and Stripes will be gunning for revenge this time in Brazil. And under new German tactician Jurgen Klinsmann, with whom the team once boasted an impressive 12-game winning streak, USA fans are hoping that the former Bayern Munich and die Mannschaft boss will steer the team through their tough group stage challenge.

Although Klinsmann controversially omitted top scorer Landon Donovan from his 23-man list, the team still does have veterans like Clint Dempsey, who was part of the squad who suffered two straight defeats to Ghana back in 2006 and 2010.  Sunderland attacker Jozy Altidore will be another the Black Stars will have to watch closely, especially if the powerful striker is having a good day at the office.

And then there's midfielder Michael Bradley, who will be familiar to Bundesliga, and Serie A fans for his spells with Borussia Moenchengladbach, Chievo, and Roma. The 26-year-old most recently netted in a friendly draw with arch rivals Mexico and is an all-around solid player in the middle of the park, so his team will count on him to put in a good shift in this evening's fixture.

For Stars and Stripes fans, the score is presently 2-0 in favor of the Black Stars. No, not 2-0 as a prediction for tonight's score line, but rather a reflection of the overall results. As mentioned previously, the United States have never beaten Ghana in their prior two encounters, and eerily, both ended in a 2-1 result.

Will third time be the charm for Kwesi Appiah's men? Or will Jurgen Klinsmann's troops finally get the better of the West African nation? Fans will find out later tonight!
