Group D kicks off on Saturday, with England taking on Italy in Manaus. Watch live as they both look to start their World Cup campaign on the right foot.

Both Italy and England enter the 2014 World Cup hopeful of being able to give their fans and their country something to smile about, as does every other country.

In order to have a positive start, they will have to overcome serious climate conditions in the Brazilian Amazon, as well as the pitch conditions. In the remote area of Manaus, the humidity is going to be a serious challenge for the players, and at the moment, it has become a challenge for the groundsmen as well.

It is unknown if the pitch will be fully ready for the opening match in the Amazon, but further concern will be whether or not it will be able to withstand all the matches played there.

For the Azzurri, they had to deal with the injury of Riccardo Montolivo in a preparation friendly match, but Prandelli will still be confident of his midfield options.

As always, Andrea Pirlo will be the main focal point for the Italians. His vision of the game is up there with the best of them, and allowing him too much time on the ball could be fatal. At the seasoned age of 35, the Juventus midfield announced that this will be his final tournament for the Azzurri, which should be added motivation.

With Pirlo in the midfield, the Italian manager is likely to have Claudio Marchisio and Daniele de Rossi doing the dirty work. That will allow Pirlo more freedom, without him having to over exert himself in the humidity of the Amazon.

Italy’s midfield as well as their defenders will have to be on high alert against an English side that has loads of promise.

Youngsters such as Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge, Ross Barkley and even Raheem Sterling are out to make a name for themselves. They have all already enjoyed themselves at the club level this year, but they will now get a chance to showcase their talent on the big stage, and against a former World Cup winner.

Hodgson’s knowledge of Italian football could be an advantage for him, seeing as he spent some time at Inter Milan. But as we have seen lately, Cesare Prandelli is not a fan of the old-school Italian football tactics, which could be a challenge for the Three Lions.

England will look for leadership in Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and even Frank Lampard. In these three, they have experience and talent, which could help guide some of the younger players to a successful campaign.

With a difficult opening match for both sides, the climate will not do either of them any favors. It will be a very hard fought match, which could result in some serious fatigue late in the second half. Better fitness and endurance could be the deciding factor in this Group D fixture.
