Match facts and other stats

  •  Peru are winless in its last seven World Cup matches (D2 L5)
  • In addition, the last South American team to beat France at the World Cup was Argentina in 1978
  • Since then, France have gone seven games sans defeat against South American sides (W3 D4)
  • France and Peru's only previous encounter was a friendly in April 1982, which the South Americans won 1-0

France may have beaten Australia in their group stage opener, but Didier Deschamps's side were far from convincing. The Socceroos proved to much tougher foes than they'd expected, and they appeared rattled throughout the contest, even conceding a silly penalty due to Samuel Umiti's clumsy handball.

Paul Pogba struggled to put his stamp on the game, and despite netting the game winner, the Manchester United man didn't have one of his best days at the office. He naturally will be one player expected to step it up, as Peru will again present another frustrating opponent for Les Bleus.

Peru were unfortunate not to get a draw against Denmark after missing a spot-kick that could have had them 1-0 up heading into the half-time break. The loss to the Danes marked their first defeat in their last five games, where they beat teams like Croatia, Iceland, Scotland, and Saudi Arabia in a series of friendlies before this summer's World Cup.

Given that Peru will need to get some kind of result here, they naturally won't be adopting the same ultra-defensive approach - which could tip the scales in France's favor. However, Les Bleus naturally won't want to take this side lightly, as they easily beat European sides Croatia (2-0) and Iceland (3-1) and will be aiming to do the same thing against a France side still struggling to find their footing.
