Juventus welcomes Real Madrid to Italy the first of the two-legged UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie between the pair. MATCH PREVIEW

A lot has obviously elapsed since the final in Wales but the threat both sides possess remains intact although it is Real Madrid that has faced a little bit of a mid-life crisis this season. Despite mounting a rather unimpressive La Liga title defense, Los Blancos has been solid in their performances in Europe bar finishing second behind Tottenham in the group stages.

The objective of securing a third successive Champions League trophy became very vivid when Zidane’s men obliterated Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16. Nevertheless, the Juventus side they come up against is anything but mere walkovers.

The Turin club, after drawing 2-2 at home to Tottenham Hotspur, came from behind to steal the win in the second leg of the encounter at Wembley. At the moment, Juventus is soaring in confidence considering they sit atop Serie A with four points separating them and earlier dwellers Napoli. The Old Ladies enter Wednesday’s game at the back of a 3-1 win over AC Milan.

On the subject of confidence, veteran goalkeeper and skipper of the side, Gianluigi Buffon, believes that himself and his teammates could do more harm than good to their aspirations should they replicate the overconfidence they took into last season’s final in the upcoming game.

“We went to Cardiff with a lot of confidence – maybe too much – and that might be the first and most serious mistake we made in that final,” he told AS.

“But we shouldn’t blame ourselves: they deserved to win as they proved to be the stronger team on the field. The best team won, but we weren't that bad to be beaten so heavily.

"There are moments in these matches when luck smiles on you and on that day it did not help us.

“I hope that we can find the weapons to make the match more balanced this time.

"We have to set up with our best qualities on the field, which is what our coach will try to do."

That withstanding, a selection dilemma beckons for Massimiliano Allegri who would not get the services of some of his best players. Mehdi Benatia and Miralem Pjanic are serving suspensions whereas Alex Sandro and Bernardeschi are yet to recover from respective injuries.

Regarding Real Madrid, only Nacho will be unavailable for the trip following his recent injury. Star man of the side, Cristiano Ronaldo, is expected to continue in his latter-day purple patch for this upcoming blockbuster.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner who scored twice when he last encountered Buffon has scored 12 times in the European competition so far and has registered 17 goals in his last eight outings in all competitions for Real Madrid. Is another nightmarish encounter beckoning for the veteran goalkeeper or vindication?
