The Brazilian icon also gave his thoughts on the Selecao's chances of winning the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Ronaldo is considered by many to be the greatest ever no9 in football history. His performance at the 2002 World Cup is one of many of his spectacular achievements, scoring a brace in the 2-0 win over Germany in the final.

However, his performance is not the only thing he is remembered for. Who can forget that awful hairdo the Brazilian sported in the South Korea-Japan tournament? Burned into the memories of every football fan is that style in which he shaved his head but left a semi-circular tuft of hair at the front.

Speaking nearly 16 years later, the Selecao icon has opened up about that odd haircut. According to the South American, that style was his tactic to divert media attention from a leg injury that he was carrying in order for him to focus on the task at hand. Furthermore, the former Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid goalscorer surprisingly admitted to one thing: that look was plain weird.

“I had an injury in my leg and everybody was talking about that,' Ronaldo said, as per the Daily Mail. “I decided to cut my hair and leave the small thing there. I come to training and everybody saw me with bad hair.

“Everybody was talking about the hair and forgot about the injury. I could stay more calm and relaxed and focused on my training.

“I'm not proud about the hair itself because it was pretty strange. But it was a good way to change the subject.”

Since their 2002 success, Brazil has come up short on several occasions in their attempts to win a sixth World Cup.  In 2010, the Selecao was only able to reach the quarter-final under Dunga and suffered an embarrassing 7-1 defeat in the 2014 semi-final held on home soil.

However, Ronaldo is optimistic about their chances in the 2018 tournament. Led by Tite, Neymar and Co. have risen to become a scary force on the international stage once again.

“A few national teams that always will be there in the finals like Germany, Spain, France,” the retired forward said. “All very strong teams. Let's see. I hope Brazil can win again.

“I'm very optimistic about the Brazilian national team. We changed a lot from the last two years ... improved a lot with the new coach.”

The Brazil players are gearing up for friendly games during the latest international break. The South American powerhouse kicks off things with a clash with host nation Russia on Friday.
