It appears a bit of misinterpretation of the manager's quotes has spread on social media.

More than a month has gone by since Mesut Ozil quit international football, but only now has Joachim Low touched on the topic of his departure. The German national boss had kept a low profile since their World Cup nightmare but finally broke his silence.

The Arsenal playmaker made headlines after taking to social media to reveal his departure from die Mannschaft shortly after Russia 2018. The 29-year-old cited a number of reasons for hanging out his boots, but racism from DFB president Reinhard Grindel was the standout allegation.

While the Premier League ace pointed the finger at the head of Germany's football association and not his team-mates, Low made sure to stress that there was no racism in the squad. The tactician also was quick to shower Mesut with praise.

However, the manager dropped a surprise revelation: Ozil did not contact him to convey his retirement plans. Low said, as per ESPN

"There was never any form of racism in the Germany team. His agent called me and informed about his retirement.

"Mesut did not call me, not to this very day. I tried to reach him several times in the past two weeks, via text message, via phone. Mesut has decided to take this path. I must accept it.

"Ozil has been my player for nine years. We've experienced a lot together. A few lows, but more highs. We've won the World Cup. This will still stay forever.

"I am still of the opinion that he was one of the best players we had in Germany in the last 20, 30 years. One day, we'll have a conversation. I would have wished for him to inform me personally, and I was disappointed at first."

The 58-year-old also added: "The issue cost us a lot of power, and nerves, because it was always there. But it was not decisive in our World Cup exit."

A mistranslation of Low's quotes has even been doing the rounds on social in which the boss says Ozil exaggerated about the racism issue. However, as stated by reporter Raphael Honigstein, the more accurate interpretation is that Mesut "went too far" with his attack on the DFB.
