Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has impressed in the little time he has been in charge of Man United. Next up for the caretaker boss is a highly-anticipated clash with Liverpool in the league, a game which could help his case for the permanent job, but one legend believes the Norwegian has already done enough for the full-time role.
That man is none other than Eric Cantona, the Frenchman man wrote his name in Red Devils folklore for his charisma and talent on the pitch. King Eric argues that the Old Trafford philosophy runs in Solskjaer's DNA, hence their upturn in fortunes recently.
Since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, many managers have come but failed to replicate the exciting brand of football fans were accustomed to. However, Cantona argues that the current interim boss is the right man as he is the “the true spiritual son" of the legendary Scottish tactician, tipping Ole to follow in Ferguson's footsteps as Guardiola did with the iconic Johann Cruyff.
“He’s got the soul of the club and you feel that he has been inspired by Alex Ferguson,” King Eric said, as per the Mirror.
“It’s like Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola in Barcelona – Ole Gunnar is the spiritual son of Alex Ferguson.
“Not all players can become managers, but some of them can and for me, it’s important that at a club like Manchester United you have somebody who has the soul of the club, who understands the club from inside.
“I think he should be given the job permanently. I would love to see that.
“I don’t know the agreement he has with the club, but for me as a fan – because now I am a United fan – it’s a great feeling to feel the soul of the club, finally. We lost that since Ferguson retired.”
It is hard to disagree with the Frenchman, given how things have picked up for Pogba and Co. Prior to his arrival, Man United appeared destined to miss out on a Champions League spot but Solskjaer has lifted the team into the fourth spot, overtaking both Arsenal and Chelsea in the standings.
He has led the Red Devils to away victories over those two clubs in the FA Cup while also beating Tottenham at Wembley in the English top-flight. The home clash with Klopp's men on Sunday will be another difficult test, as anything but a win could see them drop to fifth.
