A last-minute error by the Manchester United goalkeeper in the Nations League clash put his team’s qualification into the final in jeopardy.

Atletico Madrid and Spain midfielder Saul Niguez has backed his compatriot David De Gea after a slip-up on his part resulted in La Furia Roja falling to a 3-2 defeat against Croatia on Thirsday. The latter has particularly come under intense criticisms for failing to be the safe pair of hands he's known to be in a recent run of matches.

At the national team, the 28-year-old shot-stopper has consistently displayed an atypical form with his exploit at the World Cup topping the charts in recent times. It has been revealed that since the tournament, David de Gea has only managed to save 11 out of 24 shots on target (excluding penalty shoot-outs.

On Thursday, the Manchester United goalkeeper, yet again, came under massive criticism for the role he played in Tin Jedvaj's late goal which sealed a 3-2 win for Croatia in the UEFA Nations League encounter. However, contrary to popular opinion, Saul Niguez believes that the former Atletico Madrid goalie is not is not lacking confidence.

"When you put so much criticism on a player, it affects us all," Saul stated at a news conference ahead of Sunday's friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina.

"Even if we say, 'No, it is not good for anyone that De Gea receives criticism, they should not be like that'.

"He is one of the best in the world. There may be times when you decide good or bad and for me, it is unfair that you blame De Gea.

"I do not think he lacks confidence, he shows a tremendous personality, but what is generated, that negative energy is not good for anyone. It would be best to change energy and talk about other things.

"If David concedes goals, I do not think it's just his fault, but everyone's, we all have to pay more attention."

Currently, De Gea risks losing his No. 1 spot to Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga who has excelled for the Blues following his arrival from Athletic Club this summer.
