The 27-year-old Spanish goalkeeper’s current contract has just a year left on it.

Manchester United is reportedly ready to trigger the 12-month contract extension clause in David De Gea's contract. According to The Sun, the Old Trafford outfit is considering the approach of resorting to this one-year extension as it is yet to make headway in the discussion of a new contract which their shot-stopper.

The action will, as a result, prevent De Gea from having a pre-contract agreement with another club with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly maintaining keen interest. The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper, who was initially tipped to prolong his stay with the Red Devils following Real Madrid's capture of Thibaut Courtois, is said to be having doubts about committing his long-term future.

Having been recently named in the 2018 FIFA FIFPro XI, De Gea is believed to be concerned with the direction Manchester United is heading as he is not willing to see out the remainder of his career without actively challenging for silverware. An unimpressive start to life by the Red Devils this season has resulted in their elimination from the English League Cup and has also seen them record surprising defeats to a host of fringe sides in the premiership.

While Jose Mourinho's side is still struggling to find its feet, De Gea himself is also yet to return to his best following a nightmarish outing at this year's World Cup. Still, Manchester United remains confident of tying him down to a long-term deal.

The club will, however, be required to up its current offer of £375,000-a-week – a wage package which is equal to Alexis Sanchez's salary as the best-paid player at Old Trafford.
