Luke Shaw's promising performance for Man United so far this season is a testament to the turnaround he has enjoyed in football after a few nightmare years. However, the defender has revealed that his career nearly came to an abrupt end in 2015.
That year was when the full-back suffered a nasty leg-break in a Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven. At that time, he received tons of support due to the severe injury, but little did everyone know it came close to forcing him into early retirement.
The 23-year-old opened up about that unfortunate night, admitting that he could have lost his leg. Speaking about the incident, Shaw said (as per Sky Sports):
"I'd be lying if I said I didn't sometimes think about stopping playing football, but I had a lot of good friends and family around me and they helped me through it
"I nearly lost my leg, I was actually really close to losing my leg and I never knew that until six months after when the doctor told me. Of course, if I knew that I would [still] never have stopped, even if he had told me there was a worry, I would have tried [to carry on playing football].
"I want to be playing football, I want to be playing in the biggest games possible, winning trophies - that's my motivation, and like I said I want to be known as one of the best full-backs in the world."
The Englishman went into detail as to what could have happened, but ended everything on a positive not on his current situation, adding:
"At the time, they were thinking about flying me back (from Eindhoven) and if I'd have flown back, I would probably have lost my leg because of the blood clots and stuff in the leg.
"I've got - I don't want to talk about it too much - two scars down the side of my leg where they had to cut it open and pull them out because of how severe it was.
"But I don't really care about that anymore. I feel really strong - and my right leg is exactly as it was before my leg break."
While the former Southampton man worked hard through recovery, he was met with more obstacles once he was fit. The defender found it difficult to return to the starting eleven and had been publicly criticized by Mourinho but is now back to his best at Old Trafford.
And all of this has paid off, with Shaw getting a call-up to the national team over Ashley Young for the current international break. He is thus in-line to feature in Saturday's clash with Spain, the Three Lions' opening UEFA Nations League tie.
