The English center-back will undergo surgery as he aims to recover from a leg fracture before the season ends.

Liverpool has revealed an update on Joe Gomez's road to recover, and sadly, it's an unfortunate one. The club has announced that the defender will undergo surgery which means he will not be making his return anytime soon.

The 21-year-old has not featured for his club since December 5 when he picked up this injury in the 3-1 win over Burnley. The defender suffered a fractured leg and the Reds were hopeful of having their crucial player back by early February, but things have not gone as planned.

Gomez is yet to resume light training and is thus set to go under the knife with the hope of speeding his recovery. A return date has not been given but the Merseyside giant has their fingers crossed that he will be back before the season ends.

"Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez is to undergo surgery to assist his recovery from a lower leg fracture sustained at Burnley on December 5," a statement read on the club's official website.

"The defender has been undergoing a rehabilitation programme since suffering the initial break at Turf Moor; however, after further diagnosis, the club’s medical staff believe he will benefit from a further procedure to enable a more complete recovery."

Klopp offered his thoughts on this turn of events, admitting that this is a huge blow for the team. He said: “It’s a blow for the boy and for us - because prior to the injury he was in such fantastic shape.

“But he is too valuable to take any risk with, both for our present and future, so we get this procedure done and he comes back when he’s ready.

“His attitude during this rehab has been outstanding but it just hasn’t healed as we’d have liked so we will make this intervention and then he will come back.”

The center-back had been a star figure in the Anfield's back-four prior to suffering this injury. His partnership with Virgil Van Dijk helped keep things at the back tight as they marched into the lead in the Premier League.

Nonetheless, the Reds' title pursuit will continue regardless. They currently sit two points ahead of Man City but are yet to play their Matchweek 25 tie. That game will see them clash with a West Ham side that is one a three-game losing streak.
