Arsenal fans have launched a scathing attack at German midfielder Mesut Ozil for his performance in the shock defeat to Southampton on Sunday. The Gunners approached the Premier League encounter on the back of an unbeaten run which dates as far back as August 18.
While it was expected to be a comfortable cruise for Unai Emery's side against a lowly-placed Southampton side, the Emirates outfit was met with the dismay of conceding first in the proceeding via Danny Ings. The former Liverpool forward then assisted Nathan Redmond for the Saint's second in the 40th minute after Mkhitaryan had grabbed the equalizer in the 28th minute.
Mkhitaryan restored parity again in the 53rd-minute before Charlie Austin grabbed the game-winner in the 85th-minute. Throughout the encounter, Ozil's impact was barely felt in the attacker for Arsenal.
The midfielder also saw his miseries compounding as it was his mistake which led to Austin's late goal which subsequently ended Arsenal's longstanding unbeaten run. Having frequently been on the fringes in recent times under Unai Emery, the 30-year-old former Real Madrid stalwart was heavily slammed by fans following the end of the game.
The Ozil sub was a waste. Didn't increase our intensity or creativity. Added nothing. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but Ramsey May have done a lot better.

I've never in over 30 years watching football ever known a player to be protected by a fanbase like Ozil is. Literally an army of fanboys that will make up any old excuse to make their guy look great. Fact is he'll be gone before Emery, there's a reason for that.

It was going to be tough with our defensive worries and that was evident.

How poor was Mesut today! pic.twitter.com/SUgu9Tf6iM

Just a matter of time before Mesut joins one of the Turkish teams. He's lost his aura and it's sad to see him getting flak from the supporters. And the worst part is it's justified, cos he's been poor off late.

Ozil introduction has completely killed Arsenal

Lowered the tempo every time he gets the ball, his decision not to control under pressure set up the Southampton counter for their third#souars #afc
Why did we even brong ozil on? He's so lazy! How can you lose the ball and make no effort to try and win it back

Sunday's defeat saw Arsenal stay three points adrift fourth-placed Chelsea. The Gunners are now 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool after 17 matches.
