The French sensation may have been the Young Player of the Tournament at the 2018 World Cup, but there was no room for him in the final nominees list.

He might have won the domestic treble and the World Cup, but there was no room for Kylian Mbappe in this year's Golden Boy award. His shock omission was made public upon the announcement of the five-man shortlist.

This annual prize, created and given out by Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport, is awarded to the best player below the age of 21 plying his trade in Europe's top league. Given that the PSG ace is 19 and thus eligible, many tipped him as the favorite for the 2018 edition.

He played a key role for his French club as they won all three domestic titles in 2017/18, including Ligue 1. He then went on to steal the show for his national side at Russia 2018, being named the Young Player of the Tournament en route to winning the trophy.

The former Monaco sensation has begun the current campaign extremely well, scoring 11 and assisting four in nine games in the French top-flight. However, the 2017 winner will not get a chance to defend his title.

Instead, the accolade will go to either Trent Alexander-Arnold, Patrick Cutrone, Justin Kluivert, Matthijs de Ligt, and Vinicius Junior. Liverpool's 20-year-old right-back is one of the prime contendors.

The Englishman enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame last season, playing a crucial role for the Reds en route to the UEFA Champions League final. His hard worked earned him a call-up to the Three Lions' World Cup squad and while he only started one game but that has not hampered his progression.

Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior made the final five after making his debut in La Liga. AC Milan's Cutrone will be hopeful of getting his hands on this award alongside the two Dutch finalists: Kliuvert and de Ligt.
