The Stade Louis II boss reveals his thoughts on the departure of one of their best players in recent years to their direct rival.

On Sunday, Monaco will face the daunting task of beating PSG when they lock horns in Matchday 13 in Ligue 1. Things have not been going well for the home side this season. Newly-appointed Thierry Henry has lost three of his opening five games as manager and is still in search of his first win, with the club rotting in the 19th spot, level on points with last-placed Guingamp.

One thing blamed for Les Rouge et Blanc's fall from grace two seasons after winning the French top-flight is their policy of selling their best players to the highest bidders. This weekend, one starlet whom they cashed in on could return to haunt them once more, and he is Kylian Mbappe.

Henry opened up about the teenager's departure from Stade Louis II one season after he made the switch to Paris. The Arsenal icon was not at Monaco when they let the French sensation join their direct rival, but the current boss could not hide his disappointment ahead of Sunday's showdown.

"We have a star," Henry said when asked about Kylian (as per Sky Sports). "He is an outstanding player and let's be happy that he is in France. I would have liked him to still be here at Monaco. The match [against PSG] would have been easier for us.

"What can you say about Kylian Mbappe? Everyone talks about his dribbling, but I have always talked about his game intelligence at his age. I have rarely seen that."

While Mbappe's PSG is soaring this term, Monaco has struggled all season, first under Jardim and now under Henry

Having the pacy forward could have lead to a better start for the under-fire tactician. Instead, the 19-year-old plies his trade at Parc des Princes and is well on his way to a third consecutive league title.

Mbappe has begun the season in spectacular fashion. With 11 goals in eight games in Ligue 1 this season, he is the league's highest scorer. This, alongside his exploits at the 2018 World Cup that saw Les Bleus win the title, has seen his Ballon d'Or odds shoot up.

Henry, a man who infamously missed out on this prize twice before, argued that the accolade should be given to a French player due to their summer success. While the PSG ace was not the first name he mentioned, he did list the starlet in a list of deserving candidates.

The 1998 World Cup winner added: "I think it would be a shame if a French player does not win the Balon d'Or, apart from Eden Hazard because he was extraordinary at every World Cup match - defensively and on the counter-attack.

"But logically, a French player should win. Why not Varane? He won the Champions League, he was very strong.

"There is the alien (extra-terrestrial) Kylian Mbappe, and also Antoine Griezmann. But I can also mention many players."
