Brian Schmetzer's side had come into the first leg on an impressive five game winning streak. Following a 3-0 defeat to LA Galaxy on September 23, Sounders rebounded in style to fight their way back up the table and ultimately finish as runners up in the Western Conference. However, a 2-1 defeat in the first leg now means that they will have to turn things around if they want to book their spot in the Western Conference Finals. Still, having netted a vital away goal, the Sounders are still very much in this contest, making the second leg firmly poised on a knife's edge.

As for Portland, Giovanni Savarese's side will be welcoming key defender Larrys Mabiala back from suspension, and will be hoping that Diego Valeri, who assisted both goals during the 2-1 win over Sounders, can come up with another big game. Valeri was again the protagonist for his side as Timbers earned a hard-fought 2-1 win over FC Dallas during the play-offs to book their spot in a two-legged semi-finals against Sounders. Will he prove to be the game decider yet again this Thursday?
