Benfica will aim to avenge for last season's defeat at the Estadio Luz when it welcomes FC Porto.

Match Preview

A charged atmosphere is expected at the Estadio Luz when Benfica hosts FC Porto in Matchday 8 of the Portuguese Primeira. Clashes between the two clubs transcend the boundaries of football as it more or a less a battle for supremacy between two of Portugal’s largest cities.

Having won their respective mid-week games in the UEFA Champions League, both clubs will aim at extending the momentum into the epic encounter. Benfica, who currently seats second on the Portuguese league table, saw off AEK Athens via a 3-2 scoreline in their Group E outing. Similarly, a lone goal by Marega was enough to secure all three points against Galatasaray for FC Porto.

For Rui Vitoria’s men, the upcoming test is obviously a daunting one despite sharing an unbeaten status this season with league leaders Braga. The side comes into the Sunday’s encounter on the back of four wins and two draws. In a stretch, the Eagles have only lost two of their last forty-four league matches at home, emphasizing their dominance.

Porto, on the other hand, will be subtly fazed this bit of statistic following its exploit at the Estadio Luz back in April in last season’s campaign. The Dragons stole a 1-0 win at the death, a result which subsequently propelled them to win the league title.

Sérgio Conceição men do not boast an unbeaten record but are currently placed second on the league log with 15 points accumulated from five wins. Following the 1-0 win in the Champions League, the defending champions took their number of clean sheets in consecutive games to three.

Statistically, the odds are also in favor of FC Porto. The Dragons have a positive head to head record in last 57 meetings with the Eagles as they have managed 29 wins, drawn 14 and have lost on 14 occasions.

Still, the frantic atmosphere inside the Estadio Luz should be rewarded with a tasty spectacle for the respective fan base of both factions.
