The Portuguese boss also referred to the controversy that surrounded Paul Pogba's captaincy earlier in the day.

Once again, there was more fire coming from Jose Mourinho's mouth after a loss than when the game was still being played.

The manager formerly known as the Special One addressed the media following Manchester United's embarrassing PK exit from the League Cup. Needless to say, his first words were not filled with hope for his footballers, since he took dig after dig against them, blaming his squad for Tuesday's result.

"We could have but we didn't kill it in the first half. I repeated the words I said in the last match. Their dressing room is a dressing room with belief and we need to go and kill the game which we didn't," Mourinho said.

Mourinho's subsequent words hint that his speech is no longer having an effect on Manchester United's players, mainly due to their lack of desire after Derby's equalizer.

"The truth is the opponent in the second half started better than us, we (only) responded at 1-1. I prefer to go for it but we only go for it after the 1-1. After the red card we are in difficulty but even after that we have a group that tried until the last second," Mourinho added.

Then, Mourinho referred to Phil Jones, sharing an unflattering remark about his player's capability of scoring a penalty.

"Going after the sixth and seventh I knew we would be in trouble with (Phil) Jones and Eric (Bailly)," the coach said.

Mourinho confirms rumors surrounding Pogba's captaincy

During the buildup to the game, rumors published by The Mirror suggested that Paul Pogba would no longer be considered as team captain following a fresh rift with Jose Mourinho. While the Portuguese boss refused to call the incident "a rift", he confirmed that he made the call not to hand the captain's armband to the French midfielder anymore.

"The only truth is that I made the decision for Paul not to be the second captain anymore. It was the same person who decided Paul was the second captain. No fallout at all, just decisions I do not have to explain," the coach admitted.

The coach and his footballer share a complicated relationship caused by the player's personality and "lack of commitment", according to some sources.

The argument was supposedly fueled by Pogba's comments after the game against Wolves, where he criticized Mourinho's tactics that led to the away team's equalizing goal. Furthermore, the player's outspoken desire to leave Manchester United caused Mourinho to put an end to his term as second captain, regardless of the positive impact he's had on his team-mates during the four games where he's captained the English giants.
