The Bayern Munich center-back was wanted at Old Trafford but not even a phone call with the Special One secured a deal.

Man United made no secret of their desire to sign a defender over the summer. Jose Mourinho highlighted the need for a world-class center-back, with Jerome Boateng being shortlisted as a target.

However, the German did not make an Old Trafford switch despite the interest. With the 2018/19 season underway, the World Cup winner has now revealed why a move never materialized.

First, the Bayern Munich man confirmed that there was interest in him from the Red Devils. Furthermore, the 30-year-old had even spoken on the phone with the Special One over a transfer.

However, despite admitting to being intrigued by the idea of joining a new club, Boateng opted against returning to the Premier League. The reason: Mourinho could not convince him to quit the Allianz Arena.

Speaking to Bild, the former Man City defender said: "I had inquiries from PSG and Manchester United.

"I did not want just to get away from Bayern, but I was thrilled to try a new challenge.

"I feel well at Bayern. It's one of the biggest clubs in the world."

The German international added: "I called Jose Mourinho, I told him that his interest was an honor for me and thanked him for trying so hard for me.

"I explained to Jose that it's difficult to leave Bayern, and if I do, everything has to be in place to top this club."

Man United probably could not top the Bundesliga champion, in Boateng's eyes. He thus remained with the German giant and will be hopping on getting his hands on another top-flight title, as long as the Champions League.
