The Citizens failed to beat Wolverhampton last week. Can they get back to winning ways against Benitez's Magpies?

It hasn't been usual to see Pep Guardiola's teams dropping points, and this time, Pep's players will try to make ammends for their recent draw when they face Newcastle United at Etihad Stadium.

This will be a meeting of two Spanish bosses who have made their mark in English football. Be that as it may, Benítez will try to beat his compatriot for the first time ever, as his teams have lost three times against those coached by Pep, including a friendly when Guardiola was in charge of Bayern München and Benítez coached Real Madrid.

Even after last week's draw, Guardiola may not be keen on changing things that much. The Spaniard will have to deal with the absences of Danilo, Mangala, De Bruyne and Claudio Bravo (out for the rest of the season), which may see him repeating the same team that face the Wolves last week. Their first home game of the season ended in a 6-1 blowout, and fans at the Etihad will be expecting a similar outcome on Saturday's clash.

On the other side of the pitch, Benitez's men need to get in gear before they get involved too early in a battle to avoid relegation. The Magpies have only been able to save one point during their goalless draw against Cardiff, and their games against title contenders such as Tottenham and Chelsea finished with similar scores (2-1 losses). With that in mind, Benítez is expected to "park the bus" regardless of what critics may have to say.

For this match, Benítez will haver to deal with four absences. Three of those (Shelvey, Lejeune and Ritchie) will be due to injury, while Isaac Hayden's suspension will complicate things even more for the Magpies' Spanish boss.

Match facts

  • Manchester City claimed a double over Newcastle last season (3-1 at the Etihad and 1-0 at St. James' Park).

  • Manchester City has outscored Newcastle 14-2 in their last three meetings at Etihad Stadium, including a 6-1 blowout in October 2015.

  • Curiously enough, Newcastle's most recent win against Manchester City took place at the Citizens' stadium. That League Cup game ended in a 2-0 win for the black-and-white side.

  • Guardiola's only loss as Manchester City's boss at home took place last season, when Manchester United came from behind to beat the Citizens on April 7.
