The Spanish boss also had words for Lionel Messi, following his statements about how the Portuguese player's absence will hurt Real Madrid.

Real Madrid's coach Julen Lopetegui made an appearance in Spanish radio show El Transistor, where he discussed a variety of topics about Real Madrid.

During his guest appearance in the show, Lopetegui tackled Cristiano Ronaldo's transfer to Juventus, explaining that the player's decision left no room for negotiation, and he decided not to try and force him to change his mind.

"I never spoke with him. When I got here he had shown interest in leaving, and the club decided to help him in reaching that goal. Hence, all I had to do was to respect what the club and the player had agreed," Lopetegui stated.

The former Spain tactician also revealed that he worked together with the team's execs to add Courtois and Mariano to the squad before the transfer window ended.

"I was aware about Courtois' arrival, he's a fantastic goalkeeper. All we have to do is to give all of our goalies the right amount of playing time, and we will try to do so in the most honest way. About Mariano, yes, I spoke with him and let him know what I think of his playing skills. He knows what it means to play for this team, he will do wonders for us," the coach added.

Before the interview concluded, Lopetegui referred to Messi's words about how Cristiano Ronaldo's departure will make Real Madrid a weaker team.

"I wouldn't doubt about the skills Real Madrid players have," Lopetegui emphatically said.

Lastly, Lopetegui backed Luka Modric as his choice to win FIFA's The Best Award over Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah, and also added that he wouldn't favor a La Liga match featuring Real Madrid being played in North America.
