Diego Costa's brace steered the Rojiblancos to their first silverware this season.

After losing two UEFA Champions League trophies to their archrivals in both 2014 and 2016, Diego Simeone and his boys have finally vindicated themselves. A resolute performance inside the A. Le Coq Arena in Tallin, Estonia, saw Atletico Madrid brigade run riot over their archrivals in an encounter which was dragged into extra-time.

A double by Diego Costa and two extra-time goals by Saul Niguez and Koke secured the win for the 2018 Europa League winners with Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema getting the consolation goals for Real Madrid. The match was Los Blancos' first-ever competitive outing since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo this summer and with Atletico having never beaten their neighbors in any final on the European stage before, the magnitude of Wednesday night's win cannot be overemphasized.

The victory also dashed the Julen Lopetegui's side's ambition to clinch the Super Cup for the third successive time after winning the previous two at the expense of Sevilla and Manchester United respectively. Amid the sour end to affairs in the camp of the current European champions, new records and milestones were attained.

Here are five interesting facts about Atletico Madrid's UEFA Super Cup triumph:

  1.  For the first time ever in a final, Atletico Madrid netted four times against Real Madrid.

  2. Diego Simeone has become the first manager in the history of Atletico Madrid to beat Real Madrid in the final of three separate competitions. The Argentine has led La Rojiblancos to victories against their cross-town rivals in the Copa del Rey (2013), Supercopa de Espana (2014), and the UEFA Super Cup (2018).

  3. Julen Lopetegui is the first Real Madrid manager since Bernd Schuster in 2007 to lose his first competitive game in charge.

  4. Sergio Ramos is the first and only Real Madrid player in history to score two different UEFA Super Cup finals. He scored in the 3-2 win over Sevilla in 2016 and the 4-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in 2018

  5. Karim Benzema's goal in Wednesday's defeat means he has now scored in every competition he has played in for Real Madrid. His current overall goal tally stands at 193.
