Who qualified for the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League?

34-time league winners Benfica will again be in the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League and will hope to have better results this time around. The reigning Primeira Liga champions will be joined by Porto, who famously lifted the trophy under Jose Mourinho in 2004.

Meanwhile, the other member of the "Big Three", Sporting finished in third last season and qualified for the play-offs. However they were unable to make it past Russian powerhouse CSKA Moscow and so will have to try their luck in the Europa League this season.

Who qualified for the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League?

In addition to Sporting, the Primeira Liga will also have Braga and debutants Belenenses featuring in the group stages. Unlike fellow side Belenenses, Vitoria de Guimaraes were not able to navigate their way through their two-legged play-off in the third qualifying round and were thrashed 6-2 on aggregate by Austrian side Rheindorf Altach.

What were the biggest summer transfers?

Although he arrived on a free transfer, Iker Casillas was one of the most talked about arrivals this summer. The veteran goalkeeper, who had spent his entire career to date at Real Madrid, is now playing in a different league for the first time after joining Porto earlier this summer. Porto also had quite a few players depart, with last season's top goalscorer Jackson Martinez moving to Atletico Madrid. He was also joined by defenders Danilo and Alex Sandro, who made the switch to Real Madrid and Juventus respectively.

What were the biggest managerial changes before the start of the season?

For Portuguese football fans, by far the biggest managerial change was Jorge Jesus leaving Benfica for bitter rivals Sporting, who fired coach Marco Silva earlier this summer. Rui Vitoria, who guided Vitoria de Guimaraes to a European football berth, will have some huge shoes to fill this season as he attempts to maintain the same standard of success Benfica enjoyed under their recently-departed and highly-decorated manager.
