About Major Arena Soccer League
Major Arena Soccer League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) is North America's top arena/indoor soccer league. It was established in 2008 and features clubs from the USA and Mexico.
The league operates on a fall-to-spring schedule, with the regular MASL season beginning in November and concluding in April. The number of MASL teams has varied, from over 20 in the inaugural campaign and dropping to 14 in 2022-23. Teams are divided into Eastern and Western Conferences, with the top performers advancing to the playoffs, which have also seen changes in available slots.
The MASL playoffs consist of three rounds: quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final, each played over two legs. If any match-up ends in a draw after the two matches, 15 minutes of overtime is played, followed by a golden goal period if necessary. Originally named the Professional Arena Soccer League, the league was briefly known as PASL to distinguish it from the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL-Premier), then the USA's largest amateur indoor soccer league. The name was officially changed to the Major Arena Soccer League in early 2014.
The Stockton Cougars won the inaugural MASL season, defeating 1790 Cincinnati 13-5 for the 2008-09 trophy. The San Diego Sockers emerged as a dominant force, claiming four consecutive titles from 2009 to 2013 and back-to-back championships in 2021 and 2022. The Baltimore Blast also made their mark, winning three straight MASL titles from 2015 to 2018.
