About Scottish Premiership

The Scottish Professional Football League, or Ladbrokes Premiership for sponsorship reasons, is Scotland’s top professional football competition. This competition was formed as a merger of the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League in 2013.

Twelve teams play in this competition, with four spots available to play in European tournaments. All teams will play three games against each other, with the final five games of each season being played either between the top six or the bottom six clubs. The last-placed club is relegated to the Scottish Championship, while the next-to-last club enters the Premiership playoff stage against the winner of the Scottish promotion playoff.

The champions of this competition enter the first round of the UEFA Champions League preliminaries. The remaining three spots give access to the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Europa League.

The 2017-18 season saw Celtic claiming their fifth Scottish Premiership title in a row, raising their tally to 49 titles. St. Mirren and Livingston were promoted to the top football category in Scotland, while Ross County and Partick Thistle were relegated to the Championship.

The 2018-19 campaign starts on August 4, 2018. The final game of this competition is set to be played on May 19, 2019.

Did you know? Despite their liquidation after the 2011-12 campaign, Rangers F.C. remains as the most-winning team in Scottish football, with 54 league titles to their name.
