About Scottish Cup
The Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup, often referred to as the Scottish Cup, is an annual cup competition for men's football clubs in Scotland. It was founded in 1873 and is the second oldest competition in association football after the English FA Cup. The Scottish Football Association (SFA) runs the Scottish Cup.
In all, 112 teams participate in the Scottish Cup. The clubs that feature in the competition enter at different stages depending on their league ranking of the previous season. The lowest-ranked teams enter the competition at the preliminary round. Relatively, the highest-ranked teams, comprising of those who play in the Scottish Premiership, enter at the fourth round stage.
The fifth round features 16 teams that have sailed through the previous stage. It is followed by the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and finals, respectively. Semifinal and final games are decided via penalty shoot-outs if there are draws after 90 minutes. Relatively, drawn matches from the preliminary round to the fourth round stage are replayed.
The replay is always scheduled to take place at the home ground of the side that played away in the first match. If it also ends in a draw, 30 minutes of extra time are played. The period is followed by penalty shoot-outs if a clear winner does not emerge after 120 minutes.
The winner of the Scottish Cup is eligible to play in the following season's UEFA Europa League.
