About Supercoppa Italiana

Supercoppa Italiana History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Supercoppa Italiana (Italian Super Cup) is an annual, one-off competition featuring the winners of Serie A and the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) from the prior season. The competition was created in 1988. Initially, the Supercoppa Italiana took place before the start of the new season, quite similar to the Community Shield in the UK or the DFL-Supercup in Germany; however, in recent years, it has been moved to the winter months in order to allow it to be played outside of Italy. Under its initial format, if the same team won both Serie A and the Coppa Italia, then the Supercoppa Italiana would be contested between that team and the runner-up in the Coppa Italia.

Starting in 2023, the tournament changed from a two team competition to a four team one. Under the new format, the four teams taking part are: the winners and runners up in Serie A, plus the winners and runners up in the Coppa Italia.

Juventus, Inter, Milan, and Lazio are among the most successful teams in Supercoppa Italiana history.

Media rights to the Supercoppa Italiana in Italy have been held by various entities since the tournament’s inception in 1988. For the first few years, TV broadcasts were offered by Finnivest (which later became Mediaset), before public broadcaster RAI acquired media rights in a long-term deal that ran from the early 1990s through the early 2000s.

Mediaset then reacquired TV broadcast rights in the early part of the 21st century and held them until the early 2010s, when Sky Italia briefly acquired TV and live-streaming rights. In the mid 2010s, TV and streaming rights returned to RAI, who successfully renewed their contract in 2023 to cover the Supercoppa Italiana for another three years.

In the USA, the Supercoppa Italiana was first broadcast by Fox Soccer Plus, who secured broadcast rights in 2012. A few years later, beIN Sports then acquired the TV and live-streaming rights for the Supercoppa Italiana in a multi-year deal, before CBS Sports successfully negotiated exclusive broadcast rights in 2021 to live-stream the Supercoppa Italiana via Paramount+ and broadcast it live on its TV channels.
