About Supercoppa Italiana

The Supercoppa Italiana, or Italian Super Cup, is an annual tournament organized by the Italian Football Association. The tournament sees the Serie A champions fighting for the trophy against the Coppa Italia holders. If the Serie A winners were also able to win the Coppa Italia title, then the cup runners-up earn the chance to play for this trophy.

The first edition of the Supercoppa took place in 1988, with AC Milan beating Sampdoria with a 3-1 score. For most of its existence, the Supercoppa was held before the Serie A season began, but Italian football authorities decided recently to have the game played during the winter break after striking a hefty commercial deal.

The Italian Super Cup clash used to be played at the stadium of the Serie A winners. However, in an attempt to reach a wider audience, Italian football authorities decided to play the game abroad. Such efforts have seen the trophy being played for in China (four times), the United States (two times), Qatar (two times), Lybia (once) and Saudi Arabia (twice).

The 2018 Supercoppa Italiana ended in a 1-0 win for Juventus, who claimed the title thanks to a key goal by Cristiano Ronaldo. This earned Juve a record 8th Italian Super Cup title, steering them clear of rivals Milan. The game took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The 2019 edition of this tournament was again played in the Arabic country, this time, in Riyadh. Juventus, as Serie A champions, and Lazio, as Coppa Italia holders, locked horns at the King Saud University Stadium. I Biancocelesti shocked the Bianconeri 3-1 to clinch their fourth title.

Did you know? Nine different teams have lifted the Supercoppa Italia with Sampdoria, Parma, and Fiorentina winning it once each in the 1990s.
