About Serie A

Italy’s Serie A is the premier Italian League competition. Twenty teams play 38 matches each season, with the winner being awarded the Scudetto. The league has been operating in its current format since the 1929-30 season and has only been brought to a halt for a couple of years during World War II.

Each season, three new teams are promoted from the second-tier Serie B league to replace the three lowest-ranked clubs from the previous Serie A season. The 2018-19 season concluded with Empoli, Frosinone and Chievo as the teams that were relegated to Serie B, while Brescia, Lecce and Hellas Verona taking their place in the competition.

The Italian top-flight hands seven spots for their teams to play international competitions. Four of them will play in the UEFA Champions League, while three more are handed spots to play the UEFA Europa League. Juventus, Napoli, Atalanta and Inter will play in the UCL, while Roma, Torino and Lazio earned their spots in the UEL. AC Milan ended the 2018-19 season in fifth place, which would have earned them a spot in the Europa League, but they were sanctioned by UEFA for a violation of financial fair play rules.

Juventus is the most winning team in Serie A history with 35 titles to their name. The bianconeri side extended their dominance in the Italian tournament with their eighth title in a row after the 2018-19 campaign.

The 2019-20 Serie A season will kick off on August 24, 2019 and is set to end on May 24, 2020.

While the Serie A has arguably lost some of its glitz and glamor that had it considered by many as the top league in the 90’s, it recently regained a bit of authority in Europe thanks to Juventus' 2015 and 2017 UEFA Champions League finishes as finalists and with Cristiano Ronaldo's move from Real Madrid to Juventus in July of 2018. Other top caliber moves include the signing of players such as Alexis Sánchez and Romelu Lukaku, with both of them joining Inter Milan before the beginning of the 2019-20 campaign.

Did you know? AC Milan (1991-92) and Juventus (2011-12) are the only teams in history to win the title without any losses. The bianconeri also own the record for most points in a single season, having won the title in 2014 with 102 points.
