About UEFA Womens Champions League

The UEFA Women’s Champions League is a tournament where top teams from UEFA-affiliated countries play against each other to determine the best team in Europe. 32 teams are allowed to play in this knockout tournament.

UEFA hands out 21 byes to the knockout stage with their coefficient system. Football’s governing body in Europe gives champions from their twelve top-ranked associations a spot in the KO stage, while the nine runners-up from the nine top-ranked associations join them. The remaining 11 spots are handed out in a preliminary round consisting of ten groups. Each group’s winner enters the competition and the best second place also gains access to the competition.

The first two knockout stages are held between September and November. Due to the harsh weather conditions in some countries, UEFA hosts the next rounds in March of the following year.

The 2017-18 edition of the UEFA Women’s Champions League started on August 22, 2017, and came to an end on May 24, 2018. French club Lyon won the title by beating Wolfsburg with a 4-1 score after extra time.

The 2018-19 UWCL will see the final being played in a different venue than the one that will host the Men’s final for the first time. The Group stage kicked off on August 7, 2018. The final will be held at Groupama Arena in Budapest on May 18, 2019.

Did you know? Current title holders Lyon became the first team in this competition to win three UWCL titles in a row with their victory in 2018.
