About UEFA Euro

The UEFA European Championship, also referred to as the Euros, is Europe's senior continental cup tournament. Founded in 1960, the competition held in France initially counted only 4 participants out of 17 entries. The number of entries almost doubled (29) ahead of the following edition held in Spain. From there, the magnitude of the tournament kept growing.

From eight teams in 1980 to 16 in 1996, the Euros' expansion became a more inclusive affair among European nations. In 2016, the UEFA Euro welcomed 24 final participants for the first time. This enabled the four best-ranked third-placed team to join the top two of each of the six groups into the knockout stages which had then expanded from a quarter-final round (8 teams) to a Round of 16. Portugal, placed third among the four best-ranked third-placed teams, went on to win the first 24-nation edition of the Euros.

Beyond its expanded structure, the UEFA European Championship's prestige is underlined by the mammoth viewership figures that its matches draw. It is ranked as the most-watched competition around the globe after the FIFA World Cup. In 2012, the UEFA Euro final attracted a record 300 million viewers worldwide as audiences witnessed Spain's historic back-to-back title victory. Portugal's first-ever major silverware winning match against France in the Euro 2016 final was also watched by 284 million viewers.

For Euro 2020, UEFA opted for a Pan-European concept, spreading matches across 12 host cities. London was chosen to host the semi-finals and ultimate final of UEFA Euro 2020 whilst Germany was selected as the host country for UEFA Euro 2024.

On 17 March 2020, UEFA proposed that Euro 2020 becomes Euro 2021. Due to the global coronavirus pandemic forcing World Football to shut down, the tournament was rescheduled to a year later, with the new proposed dates being 11 June 2021 to 11 July 2021.
