About Copa América

CONMEBOL’s Copa América is the oldest national team tournament in the world. The first edition was held back in 2016, cementing its reputation as one of the most competitive tournaments out there.

The format of this competition has changed throughout the years. The first edition was played by four teams, but the centennial edition in 2016 had 16 teams participating. The competition also changed its periodicity, since it was held once every two years. Now, CONMEBOL has scheduled each Copa América with three to four years between them. The winner of this competition gets to represent CONMEBOL in the FIFA Confederations Cup.

The upcoming edition will be played by 12 teams, which will be drawn in three groups. The two best teams in each group are joined in the KO stage by the two best third places. Teams will be paired up to set the way to the final of the competition.

The 45th Copa América was held in the United States in 2016. Chile claimed their second title in history by beating Argentina after penalties. Their previous win saw them beat La Albiceleste in the exact same way.

The 2019 Copa América will be held in Brazil, from June 14 to July 7. Qatar and Japan will join all CONMEBOL teams as guests, something CONMEBOL implemented since the 1993 edition, where Mexico and the USMNT were invited.

2019 Copa America

The 2019 Copa America will take place in Brazil. This will be the 45th edition of the tournament, with Brazil playing the role of hosts for a fifth time in history. This will be the last Copa America edition to take place in an odd year, since CONMEBOL requested to change the tournament’s periodicity to four years, setting the stage to play it every four years along with the UEFA Euro.

Brazil has won each and every one of the tournament editions in which they have played the role of hosts.

Which teams will play in the 2019 Copa America?

Group A: Brazil (host nation), Bolivia, Venezuela, Perú.

Group B: Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Qatar.

Group C: Uruguay, Ecuador, Japan, Chile.

*Qatar and Japan were invited by CONMEBOL following CONCACAF’s reluctance to allow six of their teams to play in this edition of the tournament. This will be the first time since 1993 in which CONCACAF teams will not play the tournament.

Chile gets to this tournament as back-to-back champions, following their successful runs in 2015 (as hosts) and 2016.

What are the key dates in which the 2019 Copa America will be played?

  • Group stage: June 14 to June 22.
  • Quarterfinals: June 27 to June 29.
  • Semi-finals: July 2 to July 3.
  • Third-place match: July 6.
  • Final match: July 7.

Which Brazilian cities will be hosting the 2019 Copa America?

Sao Paulo (two stadiums), Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador and Porto Alegre will be the cities where the Copa America will be played. The opening match will be held at Sao Paulo, while the historical Maracaná stadium will host the title clash.

Did you know? All CONMEBOL teams have won the Copa América title at least once, with the exceptions of Ecuador and Venezuela.
