About Copa América

CONMEBOL’s Copa América is the oldest national team tournament in the world. The first edition was held back in 2016, cementing its reputation as one of the most competitive tournaments out there.

The format of this competition has changed throughout the years. The first edition was played by four teams, but the centennial edition in 2016 had 16 teams participating. The competition also changed its periodicity, since it was held once every two years. Now, CONMEBOL has scheduled each Copa América with three to four years between them.

The 46th edition of the Copa América was held in Brazil. The hosts won their ninth Copa América title by beating Perú in the title clash with a 3-1 score. This was also Brazil’s fifth win as hosts, the most for any South American country, and they will enter the next edition trying to win back-to-back titles for the third time in history. A Canarinha did so in 1997 and 1999, and they managed to repeat that feat in 2004 and 2007.

Copa América 2020

CONMEBOL asked FIFA to change the tournament’s periodicity, with the intent to play the tournament every four years, just when the UEFA Euro is being played. FIFA granted that request and CONMEBOL will now host their tournament once every four years, starting in 2020. This also means that the 2023 edition will be pushed back one more year.

The 2020 Copa América will also bring a new format, as the 12 teams will be divided into two groups, labeled Zona Norte and Zona Sur. The four best teams in each group will make it to the Quarterfinals.

Added to these changes, the 2020 Copa América will be the first to be hosted by two countries. Argentina and Colombia presented bids to host the tournament, but CONMEBOL decided to see both countries hosting the competition. Colombia will be in charge of the Zona Norte, while the other group will be playing in Argentinean soil.

Which teams will be playing in the 2020 Copa América?

Zona Norte: Colombia (co-host), Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and one guest nation yet to be determined*.

Zona Sur: Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay, and one guest nation yet to be determined*.

*Qatar and Australia were invited by CONMEBOL to play in the 2020 Copa América. Qatar will be making their second appearance in this tournament, while the Socceroos will make their debut in this tournament.

Copa América 2020 dates

The draw to determine which guest team joins each group and the calendar will take place on December 3, 2019. The inaugural match will take place on June 12 in Argentina, while the title clash will be held in Colombia, on July 12, 2020.

UPDATE: Due to the coronavirus pandemic which halted World Football, authorities re-scheduled the 2020 Copa America to take place from 11 June 2021 to 11 July 2021 instead.

Copa América 2020: Host cities

Host cities in Argentina: Avellaneda (Estadio Presidente Perón); Buenos Aires (Estadio Alberto J. Armando); Córdoba (Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes); Mendoza (Estadio Malvinas Argentinas); Santiago del Estero (Estadio Único).

Host cities in Colombia: Barranquilla (Estadio Metropolitano); Bogotá (Estadio Nemesio Camacho); Cali (Estadio Pascual Guerrero); Medellín (Estadio Anastasio Girardot).

Did you know? Uruguay is the most successful team in Copa América history, having won 15 titles up to this date. La Celeste won their last title in 2011 when they defeated Paraguay in the title clash.
