About DFL-Supercup

DFL-Supercup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The DFL Super Cup, or German Super Cup, is an annual football tournament organized by the German Football League System. The tournament is considered by fans and experts as the kickoff to every football season in Germany, with the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal winners fighting for the award. If the winner of the Bundesliga also wins the cup competition, then the runners-up from the Bundesliga are invited to the tournament.

The DFL Super-Cup was played for the first time in 1987, but after ten seasons, DFB execs decided to change the format of the competition into a six-team tournament, called the DFL Ligapokal. In 2008, a crowded schedule forced the DFB to suspend the competition, and one year later, the DFL Ligapokal was officially cancelled. The DFL Super-Cup has been played from that year on without any complications under its current format.

Contrary to what happens in other countries, the DFL Super-Cup is played either at the stadium of the DFB Pokal winners or at the stadium where the Bundesliga runners-up play. This decision was made so the Bundesliga champions are not as comfortable as in other countries, promoting competitivity. So far, the league winners have dominated the tournament, with over 14 Super-Cup wins since the competition was created.

Just as it happens in the Bundesliga, Bayern München are the most-winning team in this competition. Die Roten have been involved in over 15 editions of the Super-Cup, with only seven of those ending with them in second place.

Coverage of the DFL Super-Cup has been awarded to Sky Sport Deutschland and ProSieben Maxx, who own broadcasting rights for the competition until 2025. Additionally, Sat.1 network owns rights to the tournament until 2024. In the United States, fans can follow the DFL Super-Cup in English and Spanish courtesy of ESPN and ESPN Deportes, who have broadcast and streaming rights via ESPN+ until 2026.
