About Ligue 1

France's top football league, known as Ligue 1, is made up of 20 teams. As is the case in Europe's premier domestic competitions, the Ligue 1 is also based on a relegation-promotion system, with the three best from Ligue 2 moving up each season to replace the three poorest performing sides from the top-flight.

Some of the country's biggest clubs include Marseille, PSG, Olympique Lyonnais, and Lille, but its landscape changed when Neymar joined PSG in the summer of 2017, breaking the record for the most expensive transfer in football up to this date, as Les Parisiens paid Barcelona over $250M. Other top-caliber players include Kylian Mbappé, Edinson Cavani, Dimitri Payet and Memphis Depay.

In April, Paris Saint Germain won a second Ligue 1 title in a row. This was PSG’s eighth domestic title, which reduces the gap between the French capital giants and Saint-Etienne, the league’s top title winner. Les Parisiens accomplished that feat by keeping the top spot in the league in all but one of the 38 weeks the tournament had.

As previously mentioned, three teams are relegated to Ligue 2. Caen and Guingamp were relegated by the end of the season, while Dijon entered the relegation playoffs against Lens. Eventually, Dijon would go on to keep their spot in the French top-flight by beating the red and yellow side with a 4-2 aggregate.

The 2019-20 Ligue 1 season will run from August 9, 2019 to May 23, 2020. Ligue 1 will also see three of their teams playing in the UEFA Champions League, with those spots being handed to PSG, Lille, Lyon. Saint-Etienne, Rennes and Strasbourg made it to the UEFA Europa League. Saint-Etienne did so by finishing the season in fourth place, while Rennes and Strasbourg landed their spots in the European competition by winning the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue, respectively.

Did you know? Contrary to popular belief, PSG is not the league’s most-winning side of all time. That honor belongs to Saint Etienne, a team that has won ten Ligue 1 titles in history. PSG owns the record for most points in a single season, after hitting the 96-point mark in 2016.
