About League Cup

The EFL Cup, also known as the Carabao Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a football knockout tournament played each year by all English football teams ranked in the top leagues in the country (English Premier League, English Championship, League 1 and League 2).

The League Cup is one of the top three domestic tournaments in England, alongside the FA Cup and the Premier League. The competition’s first edition was played back in the 1960-1961 season, with Aston Villa being the first club to win it.

The tournament is divided into seven rounds, being played mostly with a single-leg format until the semi-final stage of the competition. Top tier teams are handed byes to enter the tournament until the later stages to facilitate their road to the final.

The 2017-18 season ended with Manchester City claiming the title against Arsenal on February 25, 2018. This was the Citizens’ fifth title, which matches the tally accomplished by Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa.
The 2018-19 League Cup kicked off on August 14, 2018. The final match will take place at Wembley Stadium on February 24, 2019.

Did you know? Liverpool holds the record for most League Cup wins in history, with eight titles to their name. Unfortunately for the Reds, they haven’t been able to win this trophy since 2012. The Merseyside club also owns the record for most final matches played, having participated in 12 title matches.
