About First Division A

The Belgian First Division A, or Jupiler Pro League for sponsorship reasons, is Belgium’s top-tier football league.

The Belgian top flight is played yearly by 16 teams, following a relegation-promotion system like most leagues in Europe. Only one team is relegated to the Belgian First Division B after the 30 regular season games are played
The championship is determined by a complicated playoff system. The six top-ranked clubs enter this stage with their points being halved prior to the ten playoff games. The team that wins the most points during this playoff, added by the halved points from the regular season, wins the title. The two top-ranked teams are awarded spots in the UEFA Champions League, with the runner-up having to fight for their spot in the tournament’s preliminary rounds.

The 2017-18 season saw Club Brugge win their 15th title after a nerve-wracking playoff stage. The Blue-Black team topped Standard Liege to the title by three points, after winning just three games in the playoff stage. Mechelen was relegated to the Belgian First Division B, with Cercle Brugge taking their place in the Belgian top flight.

The 2018-19 season begins on July 27, 2018. The last playoff game is expected to be played in May of 2019.

Did you know? Anderlecht is the most-winning team in the Belgian top flight, with 34 titles to their name. The Purple and White team won its last title in the 2016-17 season.
