About
TV Cultura History, Coverage, Features
TV Cultura, also known simply as Cultura, is a free-to-air television network in Brazil, which is owned and operated by the Padre Anchieta Foundation. It was launched on September 20, 1960 as C2 Cultura, but administration problems caused the channel’s shut down for over a year. Eventually, the Brazilian government and the foundation came up with the money to relaunch the channel as TV2 Cultura on June 15, 1969. The channel would undergo two more rebrandings until it settled for TV Cultura in the year 2002.
As its name states, TV Cultura has focused on broadcasting educational and cultural shows, but sports, a news journal, and entertainment programs have also been added to the channel’s grid over the years. Some of those entertainment shows were bought to North American companies, but in-house productions have also been available on TV Cultura.
Speaking about sports, TV Cultura has covered disciplines such as football, basketball, volleyball, and more. When it comes to football TV Cultura aired games for the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, the Japanese Football Championship, the Italian Serie A, the German Bundesliga, the Portuguese Primeira Liga, and other international tournaments such as the Confederations Cup.
TV Cultura started airing their content in SD format, but a new High Definition feed was developed for the channel in 2007. Both feeds are still available for users to watch.
