Mario Mandzukic scored in his own net and found himself on the wrong side of history.

The 2018 World Cup final just as anticipated lived up to its hype from the word go. After a mild action-packed 15 minutes, the game was turned right on its hend with France opening the scoring the 18th minute.

A free-kick delivered by Antione Griezmann from the right was met by Mario Mandzukic's head. However, the forward's attempt to clear the ball out of his area ended up inhis own net.

Per the World Cup's historic archives, the own-goal was the first-ever to be scored in a final since the inception of the competition. Furthermore, the own-goal was the 12th conceded at the tournament this year - the most recorded in any edition of the World Cup.

With Croatia making their first-ever final appearance at the intercontinental competition, Mario Mandzukic became the first Vatreni to score in his own net at that stage.
