Chelsea’s search for a new manager is no kept secret. While Antonio Conte remains in charge, the consensus is that Saturday’s FA Cup final will be his last game with the Blues regardless of the result.
Luis Enrique is one name linked with the Stamford Bridge hot-seat. Having led Barcelona to the treble in his debut season, the former Blaugrana boss is not only available but has the experience to lead a top European club.
However, according to Marca, talks between the Asturian boss and the London giant are now over. This means any hope of seeing Enrique at the Bridge has died down.
There have been claims that along with the Spanish manager comes a demand for a huge transfer budget, one that killed Arsenal’s interest in his services. While the same request was made to the Blues, it was not the main reason for negotiations falling apart.
According to the report, Chelsea was put off by Enrique’s “arrogance” during their discussions. His attitude was highlighted as the main reason for the abrupt end in talks.
"There was no real feeling with him at any time," a source from within Chelsea said on the 48-year-old despite holding promising meetings back in January and February.
One thing that did not rub off well on Chelsea was Enrique’s unwavering desire to have full say over the squad and the players. For the Champions League winner, this was non-negotiable.
Whether the club rekindles their interest in the Asturian or not, Abramovich will not be short on candidates to replace Conte. Napoli’s Sarri is another option for the Premier League giant.
