Firmino also achieved that same feat, netting two and setting up another two. However, with Salah stealing the limelight, the fact that the Brazilian helped set a new Champions League record nearly went under the radar.

The Selecao ace’s first goal of the night – Liverpool’s fourth – was the 381st goal of the 2017/18 season, beating the previous highest-scoring season in terms of goals per game. Three goals followed that Firmino strike, taking the tally 384 goals in 121 games with four match yet to be played.

The previous record was set last term, with 380 goals being scored in 2016/17 for an average of 3.04 per game – a goal every 30 minutes. This season’s tally stands at 3.17 strikes per matches which h translates into a goal every 28 minutes.

It did not stop there, as James Milner wrote his name in history during the 5-2 win. Assisting Firmino’s second goal, the English midfielder became the player with the most Champions League assists in a single season under the competition’s current format.

The midfielder surpassed the previous record of eight, which was shared by Rooney and Neymar. It’s not yet over, but the current Champions League campaign is proving to be memorable.
