Man United star Paul Pogba is the latest name to be linked with a move to Real Madrid. Reports emerged claiming the Frenchman is unhappy at Old Trafford, with Los Blancos interested in stealing him from the Red Devils should they be open to a sale.
This claim has a lot to do with the arrival of Alexis Sanchez. With the Chilean being yet another attacking-minded player, Mourinho has forced the French ace to play as a more holding midfielder, limiting his presence in attack.
Factor in his allegedly rocky relationship with the Special one and a number of outlets have thus deduced that the 24-year-old is pondering a Theatre of Dreams exit. Zidane’s side would be the likeliest of options as they are an elite team that could afford his hefty price tag.
However, Guillem Balague has come out to pour water on those rumors. According to the Spanish football expert, Real Madrid is being linked with the player only because they are one of the biggest clubs in the world, not due to substantial interest.
“It is normal that when things are not perfect with the superstar of a big club, stories emerge in the media,” Balague told Sky Sports.
“Regarding Pogba, a leak to French publication L’Equipe suggested he wants a different position on the pitch to improve his performances.
“When reports like that emerge, don’t be surprised that reports claiming Real Madrid want him soon follow.
“But they don’t, they do not have the money to finance such a deal after they buy their main targets this summer. Perhaps more importantly, Real president Florentino Perez does not view him as a target.”
Real Madrid cannot afford a player is not a statement you hear often, but it’s not surprising given the club’s summer targets. The Spanish giant is reportedly eyeing mega-money moves for the likes of Harry Kane, Eden Hazard, and David De Gea.
As a result, it is understandable why Pogba might not even be on Perez’s radar. He would be a young replacement for the soon-to-be 33-year-old Luka Modric, but the Champions League holder is prioritizing other positions for the upcoming transfer window.
Mourinho, who is not interested in selling the Frenchman, can now focus on the remainder of the season without distractions surrounding Pogba’s future. His next mission is to guide Man United to the FA Cup quarter-final, though they must first beat Huddersfield in the fifth round on Saturday.
