One of the biggest talking points ahead of the Champions League final is the clash between Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah. The Portuguese ace, who endured a dip in form at the beginning of the season, is back to scoring for fun and is eyeing a third straight Champions League and possibly a record sixth Ballon d’Or.
One man standing in his way is Liverpool’s Egyptian star. His goalscoring form has won him the Premier League Golden Boot and is a candidate for France Football’s coveted price. The former Roma ace has impressed so much that he is being linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu.
Some have even suggested that the Reds star could replace Ronaldo, who despite his excellent season, is aging and plays less often than desired. This proposition – swapping the Euro 2016 winner for Salah – was even brought up with Zidane in a press conference.
The French tactician’s answer was clear. When asked about trading the two stars, he said (as per the Mirror):
“No. I would not swap Cristiano or any of my players. Cristiano is the utmost. He’s the best, so he will be of utmost importance.
“I’m always calm because that’s the way I am, that’s my nature. My nature is calm and at the end, it’s better to have Cristiano, better to have Cristiano with you because he proves that every year.
Zizou then went on to hail the 33-year-old’s mentality and attitude, adding: “I believe that a player knows he may have a complex moment but for him, it’s the other way round. When he doesn’t score, he still knows he will score three or four times in a row. He knows he will get there, he can handle pressure and knows he will get there.
“Some players cannot handle pressure. For him, it’s the other way round., The more pressure you give him, the more you criticise him, the better he plays.”
The former Man United ace has been crucial to Real Madrid’s European campaign once more. He has scored 15 goals so far this season, scoring three goals past PSG and Juventus in the round of 16 and quarter-final. Victory over Liverpool would also earn the Portuguese ace a historic fifth Champions League title.
