Match Facts & Stats

  • Frankfurt have conceded just one goal in this season’s tournament (in extra-time at Heidenheim)
  • A good omen, perhaps? Wolfsburg were the last team to do that on their way to the title in 2015
  • Still, Frankfurt have not beaten Bayern in any competition since March 2010
  • Interestingly, the last game of Heynckes’ previous tenure was also the DFB Cup final
  • However, that was in 2013, and back then, it was when Bayern beat Stuttgart 3-2 to win the treble
  • Current Frankfurt boss - and incoming Bayern manager - Niko Kovac won the cup as part of a double with Bayern in 2002/03

Preview

For Eintracht Frankfurt, they just missed out on a Europa League spot. As such, winning the DFB Pokal is the only wait they will be able to find a way back into European competition next term, and will represent the perfect way for Niko Kovac to sign off on his tenure at the club. Save for the suspended Gelson Fernandes, Kovac will have a fully-fit squad to choose from in the team's second straight final, and this time around, they will be hoping to get their hands on the trophy.

Frankfurt narrowly lost 2-1 to Dortmund in last year's edition, and so far, have done quite well to reach this stage. Impressively, they've conceded just one goal throughout, which does bode well for their chances, as the last team to achieve that same feat won it in 2015. However, they have struggled against Bayern, as they haven't beaten die Roten in any competition since 2010.

Bayern, for their part, cruised to yet another Bundesliga title, but will be bitterly disappointed over the outcome of their season. At this point, die Roten have pretty much figured out that the domestic crown is already theirs, and have rightfully turned their focus to trying to win the Champions League, which has eluded them since 2013.

Unfortunately for them, Spanish opposition continues to be an obstacle time and time again, and Real Madrid proved to be their undoing for the second straight campaign. While not surprisingly, there were some questionable decisions that benefited Real Madrid (notably a handball incident) the overall outcome was not as contentious as the last time the two sides met. Regardless, that didn't soften the general feeling of disappointment among Bayern players and fans at another opportunity gone begging.

So for now, die Roten will have to settle for a domestic double to sign off on the season, and look ahead to the next campaign. Jupp Heynckes was the last coach to win the Champions League with the German giants, but was unable to do it in his return, and will look to say Auf Wiedersehen to his fourth spell with the club with another trophy in his cabinet.

Interestingly, this game could have featured the Boateng brothers on opposite sides of the pitch, with Jerome representing Bayern and Kevin-Prince representing Frankfurt, but the former is struggling with an injury sustained during their Champions League campaign and is not expected to take part.
