One position that both Liverpool and Arsenal need to strengthen is the goalkeeping role. One man who is reportedly high on the radar for the English giants is Jan Oblak.
The Slovenian shot-stopper has grown into one of the world’s finest shot-stoppers after joining Atletico Madrid back in 2014. While he has not won a single trophy since then, he was in the starting lineup of the Rojiblancos side that lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on penalties.
Rumors linking him with a move away from the Spanish capital is nothing new. Atletico president Enrique Cerezo even stated publicly that the 25-year-old has signed a new deal with Simeone’s side, but no confirmation has arrived a month later.
However, AS claims Cerezo’s remark was a mere joke and that the future of Oblak remains undecided. The Spanish publication now reports that the Reds and the Gunners are ready to splash big to acquire his services.
The former Benfica goalkeeper has a $123m release clause, which the Premier League duo is reportedly ready to trigger. PSG is another club interested in Oblak which means Klopp and Wenger will likely face competition.
Liverpool, who will be in action in the Premier League when they host Watford, is in need of a world-class goalkeeper. Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius are not the safest hands in between the sticks.
Petr Cech, on the other hand, has committed costly errors this season, leading to calls for his retirement. A move for a new custodian during the summer would be smart for the north London outfit and the Merseyside giant.
