The plummeting career of Brazilian striker Robinho was nearly ended on Thursday, as the player was slapped with a nine-year prison sentence – this is no suspended sentence like Messi’s. It was Italian authorities that found the South American guilty, handing out this punishment.
The 33-year-old was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old Albanian lady in a Milan disco back in January 2013. At that time, the forward was plying his trade with Serie A side AC Milan.
Robinho was not the only one to be punished. Five other men were also found guilty, but the Atlético Mineiro man is the most high-profile.
It didn’t take too long for the Brazilian to respond. The player took to Instagram to release a statement. He wrote:
“Relating to events of a few years ago, we would like to clarify that he already defended himself from the accusations, saying he had no involvement with the episode.”
“All legal steps are already being taken regarding this decision in the first instance.”
Looking at the statement, the player has or is likely to appeal the charge. There are several levels of appeal in the Italian justice system, which means Robinho’s sentence would be put on hold until that process is completed.
It remains unclear whether the player will likely win his appeal. Failure to do so, however, would lead to a disgraceful end to a once promising career.
