Preview

In 1998, Croatia managed to win all three of their group stage games and ended up clinching third place. 20 years later, the Vatreni are again making waves thanks to their strong showing during the group stage. Many had expected it to be Argentina to seal top spot in this summer's "Group of Death" while Croatia, Nigeria, and Iceland would fight for second place.

Well, Zlatko Dalic's side opened up their campaign with a solid 2-0 win over Nigeria, and shocked the footballing world with a resounding 3-0 thrashing of Argentina. Although they conceded their first goal of the tournament against Iceland, it wasn't enough to prevent them from earning a 2-1 result with a heavily rotated squad.

Nine points out of nine now have Croatia facing Group C's runners-up, Denmark as they hope to make it to the quarter-finals. The Danish Dynamite haven't set the pitch alight like Croatia, but they still earned a spot at this juncture thanks to a narrow win over Peru (1-0), and two draws with Australia (1-1) and France (0-0). The scoreless stalemate, however, was widely panned as the most boring game of this tournament, and their two goals scored are the fewest of any team in the round of 16. That being said, they have yet to concede a goal from open play, and will heavily rely on their defense to keep Croatia's free-scoring attack - which netted seven goals - at bay.
